Padukone, daughter of badminton player Prakash Padukone, was born in Copenhagen and raised in Bangalore. When he was a teenager, he played badminton in the national championships, but he left his sports career to become a model. He soon received offers for film roles and made his acting debut in 2006 as the main character in the Kannada Aishwarya film. Padukone starred with Shah Rukh Khan in his first Bollywood release, the novel by Om Shanti Om (2007), which earned him the Filmfare Award for best female debut. Padukone received praise for his starring role in the love story Love Aaj Kal (2009), but this was followed by a short setback. The romantic comedy Cocktail (2012) marked a turning point in his career and achieved greater success with leading roles in romantic comedies Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Chennai Express (both 2013), the comedy robbery Happy New Year (2014), and The period dramas by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Bajirao Mastani (2015) and Padmaavat (2018). Padukone's acclaimed portrayal of a Juliet-based character in Bhansali's tragic love story, Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela (2013) and a stubborn architect in the drama comedy Piku (2015) earned him two Filmfare Awards for Best Actress . His first project in Hollywood came with the action movie XXX: The Return of Xander Cage (2017).
