NEW YORK: New York dropped its traditional crystal ball set in a crowded Times Square in 2020, after the celebrations marked by the crisis in other countries ended a year of turmoil around the world that saw Paris hit with fireworks and Big Ben in London plays after a long restoration.

Billions of people around the world applauded in 2020 after a tumultuous year dominated by demonstrations calling for political riots and actions against climate change.

"I'm not particularly optimistic about the future," Natalie Reinhart, 29, told AFP before the midnight celebration in New York.

"I don't think anyone thinks the world is in a good position, and I think it's one of the distinctive things of the decade," said the New Yorker.

"There is a kind of obvious pessimism. Our pop songs are sad too."

However, Times Square performers managed to keep going, while artists such as feminist rocker Alanis Morissette took the stage before a long-awaited performance by the sensation of K-pop BTS.

New Yorker Gabriel Rodriguez, 53, expressed sadness about the future of the company, but told AFP his way of dealing with it: "I live day by day".

In the French capital, tens of thousands gathered in the Champs Elysees, despite a grueling transport strike which meant weeks of suffering for travelers.

They arrived on foot, by bicycle, by taxi and some by subway, to play in the new decade while a dazzling light show illuminated the Arc de Triomphe.

In the British capital, thousands of revelers lined up on the Thames to see the fireworks launched by the London Eye during the last year before Brexit.

After a year of political controversy that led to the resignation of Prime Minister Theresa May and culminated in the promise of Conservative Prime Minister Boris Johnson to leave the European Union on January 31st.

As tensions rise between the United States and Iran in the Middle East, fireworks have exploded in Dubai around Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world.

In Abidjan, Ivory Coast, pyrotechnics were reflected in the waters of the Ebrie lagoon.

Sydney, drowned in smoke, marked the start of the new year with a huge firework display, despite a cancellation request that received more than 280,000 signatures while devastating fires across the country.

But the show continued: over 100,000 fireworks lit the horizon of the hundreds of thousands of spectators who flocked to the city center.

- Celebrations between agitation -

After over six months of almost daily demonstrations, Hong Kong marked the beginning of 2020 with tear gas and water cannons. Pro-democracy demonstrators led their movement into the new year with countdown demonstrations at midnight and a massive march scheduled for Wednesday.

Before midnight, thousands of protesters gathered in the financial center, including along the Victoria Harbor coast and at the Lan Kwai Fong nightlife spot.

The protesters at the port said: "Ten! Nine! Hong Kong free, the revolution now!" in a sea of light from their cell phones.

Small crowds of demonstrators in the Mong Kok district set fire to the barricades and riot police unleashed their first discharge of tear gas by 2020 in response.

Earlier in the night, thousands of people joined arms in human chains that stretched for miles along busy shopping streets and local neighborhoods.

In impoverished North Korea, a large crowd that gathered for a concert in central Pyongyang applauded when the clock struck midnight. The fireworks exploded in the sky on a stage illuminated by neon lights that hosted a strongly choreographed dance show.

Across the border, South Koreans poured into bell ceremonies, a traditional ritual that marks the beginning of the new year, with a thousand

Two carnival cruises crashed into each other in a port in Mexico, damaging at least one of the ships.
Carnival Glory maneuvered to dock in Cozumel around 8.30am. Friday, local time, when it hit Carnival Legend, which had already docked behind it, leaving its stern visibly affected.
Carnival Cruise Lines said one person suffered a minor injury to Carnival Glory when a group of guests were evacuated from the dining room

A passenger was injured when Carnival Glory attempted to dock at Cozumel, Mexico, on Friday, but crashed into Carnival Legend, which was already moored nearby.
A Carnival spokesman said passengers in one of the dining rooms had to be evacuated after the accident, leaving a person with minor injuries.
Suddenly, a heavy blow is heard when shocked spectators point out that the two ships have hit each other.
The images also show damage to the rear of the Gloria, including windows that have broken and a railing that has been deformed.
The stern of the 952-foot long ship was crushed in the accident and the passengers were stunned by the heavy impact.

A statement released by Carnival Glory said: 'Carnival Glory collided with Carnival Legend this morning in Cozumel.

Colombia orders Uber to suspend application services

BOGOTA: Uber was told to immediately stop its shared transportation services in Colombia, announced industry and commerce on Friday, citing unfair competition laws.

The American tech giant has around two million active users in the country and around 88,000 drivers.

The ruling, which is subject to appeal, follows a lawsuit by a group of taxi drivers who accuse the company of unfair commercial practices.
The head of the Department of Industry and Commerce, which regulates the market, said the company should immediately stop operating, citing "unfair competition" and a "significant advantage" over traditional and traditional taxi services.

Uber cuts more staff when looking for a way to earn profits

The "effects (of the measure) are realized immediately", they added.

In a statement, the American firm repented and rejected the ruling, which "immediately appealed".

While the Ministry of Information Technology and Communications has allowed Uber to operate in Colombia and consequently pays taxes, the use of drivers for passenger transport is illegal and the police can sanction drivers who use the application.

Uber claims to have received more than 3000 reports of sexual assault in the United States UU. In 2018

Uber, founded in 2009, arrived in Colombia in 2013, but taxi owners and unions have repeatedly protested in the streets against Uber and similar competitors, who claim to have stolen their jobs.

Protests have also been organized in other cities, where pressure has even led to the withdrawal of these demands. For example, Uber does not operate in Catalonia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Denmark and northern Australia.

Salman Khan Dabangg 3

Salman Khan Dabangg 3 was released on Friday. While critical criticism has been average, audiences seem to appreciate the film, as it has opened at double figures at the box office. In an interview with a media website, Salman Khan talked about his character Chulbul Pandey.

Salman Khan said there are some characters that look really beautiful on the screen, but if Chulbul Pandey existed in real life, he would be an unpleasant boy and would be the most hated boy. She also said that that character, who is a perfect husband, is corrupt and does bad things for the right reasons, looks good on the screen, but in real life you won't like that personality.

Jessica Biel hasn't been seen making film appearances for a long time, which makes her fans want more.

It turns out that the reason why Hollywood hasn't chosen the actress for a long time is because it's quite "easy to overlook" and there's nothing extraordinary about it.
Inside information explained to the New York Daily News: "There is nothing extraordinary, like Carey Mulligan or even Amy Adams, so it's not on the radar of the studios unless they are roles of love interest."

In the meantime, Salon reported: "She has been the female lead in almost all recent films that barely has a female lead. Her strange career, working continuously, but never called to stretch, is the consequence of a Hollywood machine that she needs actresses to look nice and sell tickets, but she doesn't have an earthly idea of what to do with them. "

Additionally, the New York Daily News reported that Jessica had been hired just for her looks and not for her talent in the past.
An agent also warned that Jessica "should have an acting teacher and make one or two independent films showing her talent, not her beauty."
She added: "She may be a beautiful girl, but her ability to act is not simply where she should be. She hasn't shown herself to be a real actress."
Another plausible reason cited by the New York Daily News is that Jessica trusts her husband too, the famous actor Justin Timberlake.

A source revealed to Vulture: "His claim to fame is to marry Justin Timberlake".
Categorically, none of Jessica's films are said to have performed very well at the box office and that its protagonists did not leave the $ 100 million club.
However, none of this is Jessica's fault and her agents should be blamed, as reported.
